Whew!

Ok, Life 1, Ray 0.

I've been super busy in the real world with work, business trips, my wife, dogs, friends, etc. I haven't been able to play or model in just as long and I'm missing it dearly.

One item of note, I work in a small office within my company with six women. While this can be trying at the best of times, the past month has been much more fun. The ladies decided they would start playing "Biggest Loser" and roped me into it. I figured I could drop some weight as I moved down here to Miami at 145-150lbs and am now in the (according to the weigh-in scale) 202 area. So I've been working out. A lot. I've been attending karate classes with my wife 3-4 times a week for 2 hours at a time. I've been running a mile in the morning (5AM running is nice, probably the best weather Miami has to offer). My karate sensei has decided to teach a small group of us judo and I'm really enjoying it, so much so I am thinking of leaving the dojo for a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school and keeping my sensei as a personal trainer.

Anyways in WM/H news I purchased TOM and Harby. But due to the business and sickness (my wife's grandmother gave me the bubonic plague, i swear) I haven't even taken them out of their blisters.

Gonna have to work up a new nerd-friendly schedule to include my jiu-jitsu, mountain biking, running, work, wife, dogs, modeling, painting, and playing.

The Masses Have Spoken

Hey guys, well, the masses, erm, uh, the 9 of you have spoken (thanks mom). My blog specifically for my Menoth Army will be called Trial By Fire.

I'm working up a simple banner like the one above and I've cross posted the three posts here onto there so I don't lose track of them.

During the MKII Field Test (this last week) I will be updating the blog then as I play the army and build upon it I will be posting then too.

I'm thinking, perhaps, (and time will tell on this) if I should just amend the name of this blog to cover both and work up a simple banner for both...

anyhoo, for the time being at least there is a new blog up (nothing overly exciting I'm afraid) over at Trial By Fire

Priming

So I'm waaaay behind on my painting. So sue me.

Anyways. I played a lot of Orks in 40k and WHFB back in the days and so I was used to a lot of black primer. I'm very comfortable with black, it hides my mistakes well.

But I'm curious now. I see a lot of gray primered models and white primered models. Anyone out there (hopefully troll players) prime in anything other than black? Can you drop me a link to your work so I can see how it comes out on other people's models.

Thanks guys!

Menoth vs. Cygnar

Menoth vs. Cygnar

I played Andre twice last night. Both times he played Nemo.

I played CerealJohn's (Getting Small)
(http://newtowarmachine.blogspot.com) Amon list in both games (sorry
John, it looked like too much fun)

High Allegiant Amon Ad-Raza
Vanquisher
Vanquisher
Dervish
Idrian Skirmishers
>Idrian Skirmisher Chieftain & Guide (2)
Choir of Menoth (6)
Vassal of Menoth
Allegiant of the Order of the Fist
Allegiant of the Order of the Fist
Deliverer Sunbust Crew

I think he played the following:
Nemo
>Squire
Stormclad
Charger
Charger
Thorn(?)
Storm Guard (full)
Stormsmith (3)
Journeyman Warcaster

Game 1
I had first turn, I followed John's advice to run the Sunburst onto a
hill and camp it out. Worked marginally well. As I am still new to WM
I failed to allocate focus to jacks for two turns (luckily though my
opponent was very understanding). Skirmishers preyed on the Storm
Guards this game. I forgot to go to ground after running them into the
forest at the center of the table. They got beat, bad. Chain Lightning
fried most of them through auto hits arcing from his Stormclad. The
remaining 2 Skirmishers charged a Stormsmith and killed him before being
obliterated next turn.
Bottom of the second turn Nemo feated while within range of all my
jacks. He hit two of the three disrupting them. Damn. But the
vanquisher with LOS to him was unharmed (woot!) Top of turn four
allocate three focust to the sole Vanquisher who can take focus and
upkept synergy, Amon activates and casts Mobility and moves outta the
way. Activate what's left of my choir and sing Battle Hymn to the
Vanquisher. Vanquisher activates and charges Nemo (unprotected in a
forest), Vanquisher squishes Nemo good.

Game 2.
Again I had first turn, I allowed Andre to tune his list a bit, he and I
felt he needed more arc nodes in the list (he was only running one in
the first game). I set up behind a building with most of the army save
the Sunburst. Similar to last game I ran the Sunburst first turn and
all the rest. Also similar to the first game the Idrians got squished
VERY early, never even getting off one CRA. Flying monks went up the
flanks hoping to catch Nemo from behind. Unfortunately Catherine
Laddermore met one and he was forced to fillet her horse. Laddermore
tried to exact vengeance for her steed unsuccessfully and of course the
monk whalloped her for that lack of respect.
Elsewhere on the battlefield one Vanquisher tried a shot at the unit of
storm guard and missed horribly only to scatter onto all but one member
of the unit, setting them all ablaze. Rolling the blast damage took out
one or two then during the next turn one Storm Guard was able to
extinguish himself while all but one other died in a fire.
During all this a Charger popped the flying monk who killed Laddermore.
Thorn and the Stormclad were threatening Amon's position along with a
Charger coming through the woods. Chain lightning happens. Amon got
zapped twice and died.

Menoth 1, Cygnar 1

Thoughts: I think Vanquishers with their auto fire will be staples in my
eFeora lists in MKII along with a Vassal. I either was playing the
Idrians way wrong or they are VERY weak in the current format. I've
never played them in MKI so I cannot compare to their previous
iteration. The Sunburst was decent, hit its mark once and squished a
Journeyman Warcaster and most of a Charger, but no other amazing feats.
The flying monks feel like solo and caster hunters and seem to do their
job well with high mobility and solid hitting power on the charge. The
Dervish seems like it could have more mobility using the spell of the
same name and its Sidestep ability, but I was unable to put all my ducks
in a row to get it all set up for a slice 'n' dice run. Maybe next
game...

Overall record:
Cygnar - 2/1/0
Protectorate of Menoth - 0/0/0
Khador - 0/0/0
Cryx - 0/0/0
Mercs - 0/0/0
Trollbloods - 0/0/0
Circle of Orboros - 0/0/0

Overall Win Pct: .666

Menoth is my Copilot

Skip ahead again, I played my first WM game last Thursday with my Thursday play group. We played MKII rules (woot!).

My list:
Protectorate of Menoth
24/25

Feora, Protector of the Flame (umm, epic caster at low point values? yes please!) (-6)
Revenger (6)
Redeemer (6)(bonded) (umm, insta-fire? woot!)
Temple Flameguard (6) (full)
>Temple Flameguard Officer & Standard Bearer (2)
Holy Zealots (6) (full)
>Monolith Bearer (2)
Covenant of Menoth (2)

I goofed and could have added in a full unit of wracks for the last point but forgot. Next time.

I ended up playing one game, against Art and his Cygnar bastages.

About 3rd turn I had set fire to a good amount of things and feated. Unfortunately I fouled up order of operations and could only apply focus to my Redeemer and then I read the card wrong and thought I could add a lot more focus than I thought. bah! anyhoo, he threatened Feora who moved back around a building and out of sight only to pop up on the other side of the battlefield where her Revenger was threatening Kraye.
Kraye took a deal of damage from the Revenger (not sure if it was a free strike or the charge I made against him prior to the free strike) in charging Feora. Feora was a tough cookie though, one more point of damage and this would have gone the other way. He failed to kill Feora with one point left. He even moved his Charger (?) out of melee (taking free strikes from my TFG) to take a shot at Feora in melee with Kraye. Missing horribly.
Feora's turn came around, she got her focus back and without missing a beat, full focus took one swing at Kraye and cleft him in twain.

Menoth 1, Cygnar 0

Feora will be mending her wounds this week. Perhaps Silent Bob will be commanding Menoth's troops.

Muddying the waters

I've tried my hardest to keep this blog strictly about my Troll experiences but I'm completely enamored with the new MKII rules and my new Menoth army.

So here's the scoop. For the next three days (until the poll is closed) I think I'll post up my thoughts and experiences with my MKII Menoth army (and probably just copy the posts over to my Menoth blog when it's up and running).

*    *    *

So I got hooked on Menoth. What did it? Well just like the Trolls it was the models that sucked me in. First and foremost, this guy:

The Guardian. Followed closely by the Dervish, Devout, Revenger, Avatar of Menoth ad nauseaum.

Then I started reading the fluff. Wow. Some really cool stuff going on there. The first model to catch my eye was the High Reclaimer, or as I have come to know him, Silent Bob

In choosing a Warmachine army I really liked the recycling of Cryx and Menoth, but the Menoth jacks did it for me and Bob made the choice complete. Then I discovered the dirty little girls of Menoth. Harbinger and Feora and they totally sealed the deal.
*    *    *

Skip ahead a bit, I purchased a Menoth army from a local player looking to get out of WM and get season tix to the Dolphins (I think we all know who won out in that exchange!).

Question for PPS_Kevin

Our friendly neighborhood Press Ganger gave me a tactic to use with my Longriders the next time I run them.

If you’re in melee you can still charge the same model if you can move 3” against the same model without leaving combat (thus no free strikes) gaining your impact attacks and charge bonus.

I don’t see where this is wrong, but I don’t see where this is right either (spirit of the game).

I would love it if Kevin or someone could guide me on this.

Schism Results

Played the Schism tourney @War & Pieces yesterday and had a blast!
I played three games, the first against Joey, the store owner with his Darius Cygnar list and the last two against Ian and his Testament of Menoth Protectorate list.

I want to say this now, I could have cleaned up for the survivor medal but I didn't even think about it, I went in to have fun. At the end of the 2nd game I realized I had a shot at it, but because my first game went so long and my second game I sacrificed my Earthborn I failed :(

Here's what I should have done:
1.) I should have decided on winning that medal prior to the tournament.
2.) Run all my lists beast heavy. at 750, I can run Borka with 4 heavies and 3 lights for 18 VPs. At that point it's all about sacrificing your Warlock. Run him up to your opponent's warcaster and he has two choices. A.) allow you to walk up to his caster and beat him down at full fury and get all the VPs or B.) Kill your lone warlock and you still get the VPs.
3.) In all my games, i needed to sack my warlock. just as above, run him up, screaming and yelling, and collecting VPs.

shoulda-woulda-coulda-but didn't. damn.

I ended up with 16 survivor VPs. The winner of survivor had 22. Not a big margin, had I not sacked my EBDT in game 2 I would have been 3 points closer :)
Im on the lookout for the next one of these. At 750 I should be able to scoop up 18 VPs a game. :)

Oh and for all my hard fighting, I lost all three matches.

Schism Lists

So I’m thinking of my Schism lists for this Saturday at War & Pieces ( http://www.warandpieces.net )

Basically three lists.  750 points each.  Characters and casters cannot be in more than one list.

Here we go:

Grissel 750 List

748/750

24 VPs

27 Models

Grissel Bloodsong - 70

Troll Impaler - 75

Dire Troll Mauler - 111

Fell Caller - 35

Trollkin Champions - 106

Trollkin Champions - 106

Trollkin Hero - 38

Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (+2) - 50

Stone Scribe Elder - 18

Trollkin Longriders (+2) – 139

This is an attrition list.  84 wounds on the Champs plus the Hero.  Full Longrider unit.  KSB.  Very little in terms of beast support but I think Grissel and her fell calls will work well.

Borka 750 List

741/750

26 VPs

25 Models

Borka Kegslayer – 74

> Pyg Keg Carrier – 0

Troll Axer – 72

Troll Impaler – 75

Winter Troll – 75

Dire Troll Mauler – 111

Fell Caller – 35

Stone Scribe Chronicler – 19

Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (+2) – 50

Stone Scribe Elder – 18

Trollkin Champions – 106

Trollkin Champions – 106

A beast heavy list still utilizing the 84 wounds on the champs.  This should be the Irresistable force to go up against whatever Immovable objects may be presented (If I lose the defender status).

Grim 750 List

746/750

22 VPs

16 Models

Grim Angus – 76

Troll Impaler – 75

Earthborn Dire Troll – 125

Dire Troll Blitzer – 118

Troll Axer – 72

Trollkin Longriders (+2) – 139

Fell Caller – 35

Trollkin Champions – 106

Very beast heavy.  This builds off of the Earthborn missle 350 T&C list.  It adds in the mobility of the Longriders with the bodyguards of the champs, with Metamorphose Grim can still be ARM 21.

I don’t think anyone from my play group (short of Guy) reads my blog so I’m not overly concerned with tipping my hand.

Call To Arms Final and Random Thoughts

I just realized I have never posted my standing on the Call to Arms league.  Oops.

Well, let’s just say that I got the Mediocrity Award for coming in higher than anyone who only showed up for one night.

Standings at the close of the league:

1. Gabriel A - 63 pts.
2. Stephan C - 48 pts.
3. Cary V - 44 pts.
4. Cesar M - 29 pts.
4. Ed S - 29 pts.
4. Arturo R - 29 pts.
5. Dios C - 23 pts.
6. Ray Guimond - 21 pts.
7. Laz Q - 10 pts.
8. Guy L - 8 pts.
9. Mario M - 5 pts.
10. Steve Q - 4 pts

So yea, I got that going for me…snicker.  I guess I’ll try to get in more 750 point games come May 15th and the next league starts then cherry pick as many points as possible.

Kind of feeling a little burned out on my trolls and I’m really looking forward to getting started with my Menoth force.

Cesar contacted me (being another Hordes-only player) about a game this Thursday at Sunshine ( http://www.sunshineroleplayers.com ).  Hopefully there will be room.  I would like to get in a 750 practice game with him before Schism @ War & Pieces ( http://www.warandpieces.net ) but if he doesn’t have a 750 point force I think my three lists can be broken down to their basics at 500 points.  (posting my lists next)

Am I the first to notice?

I don’t read the big boards much anymore because I can’t access them from work, but, am I the first to notice that Ayanna and Holt have been changed?

“Master Holt & The Ugly Ampersand”

Then they list Ayanna’s stat line and weapon stuff.  Looks like an “oopsie”.

More MKII Hordes Musings

I think Borka's Mosh Pit is going to be changed (out of turn movement)

Also, possibly the Winter Troll's animus may be changed (out of turn activation)

I went to my FLGS last night to see what the hubbub was. Boy was that a mistake. No sooner did I walk in and I heard the owner pissing and moaning that "Bastions are $45 for 5 models, that's $9 per model for plastic, nobody's gonna pay that, woe is me, gloom and doom" (of course I'm paraphrasing)I told him to relax and continue what he's doing with WM/H anyways which is keeping a *MINIMAL* stock on hand (mostly books and a couple starter boxes) and special order all the rest and make sure it comes in in a timely manner.

Then for the next *two* hours I was given the pleasure of listening to Art rant, rave, piss, moan and whine about "how they ruined the game" and that "the flaws are inherent" at which point I was forced to say "shut the fuck up Art. if you don't like the game, sell your models and go play one that will never change, like Chess. because, seriously, I don't want to hear it, and nobody does either. have you played any games? No? then shut the fuck up."

I'm sick of people jumping to conclusions without even trying the new rules.

100th Post, Mark II Hordes Musings

So I'm pretty well sure I'm going to go with Protectorate of Menoth for Warmachine. I've contacted a local guy who's selling his Protectorate army (not because of MKII). I've also been reading the MKII rules and stat cards and I see and agree with almost al of the rules changes and those that I don't like are so few I'll learn to live with them. However, the whole thing leads me to think about what will happen to my beloved Trolls when time for MKII Hordes comes around.

I love my champions. They really do make for an awesome force. However, perhaps Concert may be a bit strong and possibly confusing. I see either Concert or Brothers in Arms being toned back a bit, not that I would like that, but perhaps PP thinks it best.
Grim Angus. I see his feat changing. As it stands right now it's quite a bit of information to digest to play it. Also, he will most likely lose some of his vision abilities for whatever reason.
Borka and Kenny, Chiller may be dropped as a spell. His bomb may not bounce anymore. Not sure.
Fell Callers, god, I hope not, but they may bring their song choices down.
Grissel, I see her as her fell calls taking an action in MKII. ANd her feat will probably be toned down.

We'll see in a year, and I hope we don't see many changes, but it's quite possible we will.

Any ideas what possible MKII Hordes changes we should expect for the trolls? Anything you think may be overpowered?

by the way, i'm going to try to start blogging int he AM before work so I can post pictures and make this blog a bit more interesting.

Cygnar 1-1

Played Andre and Art tonight. Both playing Cygnar.
Andre is a very new player (only about 4 games under his belt) and I shouldn't count his game, but this is my blog and when I played Ashe I counted that game.

I played:
Faction: Trollblood
Points: 486
Model Count: 17
Victory Points: 17

Borka Kegslayer
> Pyg Keg Carrier
Troll Impaler
Winter Troll
Fell Caller
Trollkin Champions [5]
Trollkin Champions [5]
Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew [2]

I think Andre played:
Faction: Cygnar
Points: 500
Model Count: 25
Victory Points: 19

Commander Adept Sebastian Nemo
> Squire
> Lancer
> Centurion
Gun Mage Captain Adept
Journeyman Warcaster
Field Mechaniks [6] (2 added)
Sword Knights [10] (4 added)
> Sword Knight Officer & Standard Bearer [2]
Rupert Carvolo, Piper of Ord

I played a good game. Stationary + Free Strikes (Mosh Pit) will mow down almost anything short of a Centurion. Effing 24 armor jeebus. Anyways, We played No Man's Land. It came down to him having to run Nemo away and I would have just pursued with my unit of Champs that hadn't lost a single model. He did some good damage with Nemo's chain lightning the first shot, he should have just poked me with the jacks for their base attacks and just arc lightning all over the place. He'll get better, I see him being a good opponent in tourneys.

2nd Game was against Art. I told him we didn't have much time so he would have to shut up and play a quick 350 Mangled Metal game. (Art, 350 Mangled metal, don't fight me for 500 or 750 when it's 10PM and the store can/will and has closed before 10PM)

I played the Grim List I posted the other day. Art played the following:

Faction: Cygnar
Points: 351
Model Count: 4
Victory Points: 11

Captain Jeremiah Kraye
> Hunter
> Hunter
> Hunter

Yea, I know it's a point over. I wasn't about to whine. I wanted another game and I wanted to play Art without his stoopid Haley lists. Unfortunately Earthborn Dire Trolls, Impalers and Axers on their large bases don't do well against armor piercing. So I got shot to shit. The one round I had a clear shot at Kraye I muffed the roll and got 3 damage. beter luck next time Ray

Borka @ 500 Points

I’m thinking of running Borka tonight.  No league tonight, last week was fun games and medal ceremony for Call to Arms.  This week is just pick up games.

If you remember correctly Cary and her Sorscha list wrecked me last week.  Eek.

I’m thinking of running Borka, I testing some fundamentals of one of my schism lists: Mosh Pit + Freezer + 2 units of Champs

Right now the list for tonight is looking like this:

Borka Kegslayer

>Kenny, Pyg Keg Carrier

Winter Troll

Dire Troll Mauler

Trollkin Champions

Trollkin Champions

Why did I choose the beasts I did?  1.) Winter troll.  I am in love with freezing my opponent.  I charge my champs in and cast Freezer on them.  You now either run away and take a free strike or you stay put, get pushed from Mosh pit and get autohit on a free strike then I move in and autohit you on my next turn.  2.) Dire Troll Mauler.  I still love the look of this model.  It was the selling point of Trolls for me.  The animus is cool and he’s got a lot of damage transfer if needed.  And the option of the Borka Bomb is still there.

This puts me with 28 points leftover.  I’m not sure what to add.

Stone Scribe Chronicler – Protection turn 1, +2 attack and additional damage die turn 2, Parting Blow on turn 3.  The turn 2 portion is a little situational because the champs would have to be in range of something that a full blooded troll has melee range to.

Swamp Gobbers Bellows Crew – Protection, not overly effective against Legion, but then again, not many Legion players in my group

The final option would be to swap out the Dire Troll Mauler for an Impaler or Pyre Troll.  Impaler would work well with the Chronicler as he would be able to be in melee with more than most other models due to reach and the Pyre Troll would allow me to field a unit of Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes to protect myself a bit more.

Trolls 350 T&C

Following CerealJohn’s post on Getting Small this is what I would play for 350 T&C/MM Trolls:

Grim Angus – Just too much board control there to give up.  With the small model count Grim able to lock one down is too good to pass up.  Should be shooting one gun each turn unless he’s in melee combat, which if he is, you’ve already lost.

Troll Impaler – Again, with a crit slam @ 44% at 12” away, low DEF beasts and jacks are easy targets.  2” reach makes charges nice.

Troll Axer – Thresher isn’t the infantry killer in this format but Rush animus can catch my opponent by surprise.  With the size of that axe you would expect reach, but, no.  You’d be wrong.  He and the Impaler work well sticking close to Grim.

Earthborn Dire Troll – “And together we form Voltron!” He’s a melee beat stick.  The troll missile is complete.  With a possible 14” charge range (5” move, 5” Charge from Rush, 2” from Headhunter’s Bait the Line, and 2” from Elemental Communion) and when he gets there he’s fury-free meaning you’ve got 5 boosts to use on him.

Warmachine Starting Points

I'm considering starting a Warmachine army after we get more info on Mark II.  I'm considering the following with my personal pro's and con's:

Menoth -

Pro's - who doesn't like religious fanatics with swords, bombs and flamethrowers?  I like the recycling effects of the High Reclaimer and Testament of Menoth.  The jacks looks absolutely beastly.

Con's - from what I've read they can be a finnikey army to play, not absolutely straightforward and could have a long adjustment time.  Lots of fiddley bits that need painting.

Cryx -

Pro's - Skarre-bomb.  Nightmare.  Rengrave.  Revenant Crew (the recycling thing is really cool).  Tartarus.  Great Rack.

Con's - Bane Knights changes in MKII, not sure how this staple unit will work post MKII.  Lack of (imo) cool looking jacks.

Khador -

Pro's - Big-badass jacks. they hit HARD.  they can take a beating.  Sorscha's feat is awesome in a bottle.  Kharchev looks like a lot of fun to play as does the Butcher.

Con's - Big-badass jacks.  they move slow.  no light jacks.  the Manowars look goofy, Fenris looks silly and I don't think the Doom Reavers fit the style of the army at all.

Can anyone provide me with any insight in how you think these three factions will work out in MKII and how they play currently?

Stupid question...

When facing a full unit of Protectorate Zealots is it best to run from them and hope to get out of range of their bombs or dive in (with your ‘caster/’lock) and lay waste?

I ask as I was faced with the decision this weekend in the game against Rick and I chose to run however with Hoarluk’s Gnarlroot staff I think I could have taken out a good deal of them and hopefully cause a command check.  However I ran.  And got explodey-fied.  Whoosh!  Up in flames.

Ghetto Terrain

As I was playing at home yesterday and as I don't own nor can I store any terrain I had to improvise. I ran out to Michael's and picked up some felt. Three colors to cover all the terrain expected in Warmachine and Hordes.
Brown for hills, green for forests and blue for water.

It worked out very well and was very cheap. I would recommend it to anyone without a way to store any real 3d terrain.

Friendly Games @ Home

Rick and his girlfriend, Ashe came by yesterday for a couple games. Rick had been a little down on WM/H and wanted to play fluffy armies outside of the normal league or tourney nights.

I played Ashe first, she wanted to play a 350 point list, I went to the Trollbloods battle box (I hate that battle box, it so boring).

She played:
Faction: Circle Orboros
Points: 355
Model Count: 4
Victory Points: 13

Krueger the Stormwrath
Argus
Pureblood Warpwolf
Woldwarden

I played:
Faction: Trollblood
Points: 286
Model Count: 4
Victory Points: 11

Madrak Ironhide
Troll Axer
Troll Impaler
Troll Impaler

The game went well. Ashe almost got me, if Kreuger hadn't moved into range of my axer's melee I would have lost. She had her warden and pureblood closing in on Madrak. but Madrak pulled it out and his axer took a swing from behind and sliced Kreuger in half.

Second game against Rick went a little longer (we should play scenario!)

I played:
Faction: Trollblood
Points: 497
Model Count: 11
Victory Points: 18

Hoarluk Doomshaper
Troll Axer
Troll Impaler
Dire Troll Mauler
Earthborn Dire Troll
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes [5] (1 added)
> Stone Scribe Elder [1]

Rick played:
Faction: Protectorate
Points: 494
Model Count: 25
Victory Points: 18

High Executioner Servath Reznik
> Redeemer
> Revenger
> Castigator
High Paladin Dartan Vilmon
Wrack
Wrack
Wrack
Choir of Menoth [6] (2 added)
Holy Zealots [10] (4 added)
> Monolith Bearer [1]

I wrote up an entirely new list because Rick had shown frustration with people who play uber-competitive lists. So I wrote up a very fluffy, beast heaavy list. I marched up the battlefielf slowly, keeping the squishy nougat of Doomy under the Metamorphose and KSB effects. I realized how badass Vilmon was so I avoided him like the plague, so much so that my entire army ended up shifting far to the right to avoid him and also because Reznik was over that direction, hiding, like a little bitch :)
When Vilmon got close enough to Doomy I just said *fuck it* and charged him. One swing with Gnarlroot is all it took. I was very surprised.
I fouled up at the end and instead of charging into the zealots to avoid the goddam firebombs I ran. I could have smoked 7 of them with all Doomy's fury he had camped, causing a command check and being VERY far away from Reznik.

Troll MVP: Dire Trolls (both), they destroyed jacks left and right, at the end all he had left was his Revenger, while I was throwing the Redeemer and Castigator around.
Protectorate MVP: Those goddam Zealots and their bombs.

Pick up game 3/26/09

I played Cary last night.  Again I failed miserably.

And as I'm a big dufus, I forgot all my cards except my Grissel list I've been playing so that was the only list I could play.

Faction: Trollblood
Points: 494
Model Count: 18
Victory Points: 18

Grissel Bloodsong, Fell Caller
Pyre Troll
Troll Impaler
Fell Caller
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes [4] (0 added)
Trollkin Champions [5]
Trollkin Champions [5]

Faction: Khador
Points: 486
Model Count: 14
Victory Points: 19

Kommander Sorscha Kratikoff
> Destroyer
Koldun Lord
Man-O-War Drakhun
> Man-O-War Drakhun (Dismounted)
Manhunter
Yuri the Axe
Widowmakers [4]
Ogrun Bokur
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt [2]

We played a basic SR4 scenario, No Man's Land.  I got firrst turn (yay!).  After that I was a turn behind Cary.
Grissel dumped 4 fury onto the KSB, advanced onto a hill (biggest mistake of the game), fell called Hoof it to a unit of champs.  Impaler and Pyre troll both riled for 1 and ran.  Fell Caller moved up, sang open road to other unit of Champs.  2nd unit of champs ran up 10" (with one model still in rough terrain.  KSB moved up and dropped the aura.

After this it was kind of a blur, on the 2nd turn Sorscha (as she normally does) feated, catching Grissel up on a hill with perfect view of her.  I played too defensively, not wanting to take the charge from the Drakuhn and Yuri.  Had I moved up, I would have blocked LOS to Sorscha and Grissel would have not been frozen and knocked down.

It came down to Cary had to eliminate both my Pyre Troll and my Impaler over two turns as Grissel was sitting on full fury to transfer damage.

Cary definitely knows Sorscha much better than I know Grissel, and even though this is another loss to her, I think I'm doing better than whenI started, I just need to think my moves out better and not leave my caster on top of a hill waving her arms and shouting, I'LL BET YOU CAN'T FREEZE ME FROM THERE!

MVP: Grissel, even though she got her stupid ass killed, using Cacophony while frozen and knocked down made Sorscha's life difficult according to Cary, had Grissel survived into her next turn she would have moved back out of Ayana and Holt's range (stupid "no feats) and feated on Sorscha, with 8 or so champs around her.  I don't think she would have survived.  But as I said at the beginning, i was one turn slow, perhaps if I had moved forward more on my second turn I would have forced her to feat defensively and put her on my terms.  Oh well, next game.

Grissel's Broke!

Ok, I was reading a thread yesterday on Battle College about how you could run Grissel after Fell Calling her. I had worked up a great response on why they should take it down and then I re-read Grissel and noticed, "hey, her fell calls aren't actions!" To that end I posted to the better rules forum (Guru Dojo Thread) I use most often who advised I post to the big boards (The Big Boards)

Um, I just noticed that Grissel's fell calls are not actions like a normal Fell Caller (thus, allowing her to Fell Call then run).

Does this mean that I can use her Fell Calls if she is made stationary by Sorscha's feat or knocked down?

Stationary reads:
Prime Remix Pg. 54
"Stationary models cannot move, perform actions, make attacks, cast spells, use animi, use feats, or give orders."

Knocked Down reads:
Prime Remix Pg. 52
"A knocked down model is stationary until it stands up...To stand up, a model must forfeit either its movement or its action this activation."

as this would not fall into any of these categories would I be able to use her Fell Calls if she was with either status?

Grissel's Fell Calls read as such (card and book match):
Primal Pg. 83
"Bloodsong may make one of the following calls any time during her activation..."

Call to Arms Week 5

Game 1 vs. Cary (Khador)

Troll list:
Faction: Trollblood
Points: 494
Model Count: 18
Victory Points: 18

Grissel Bloodsong, Fell Caller
Pyre Troll
Troll Impaler
Fell Caller
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes [4] (0 added)
Trollkin Champions [5]
Trollkin Champions [5]

Cary's list (I forgot the rest :( )
Faction: Khador
Points: 406
Model Count: 6
Victory Points: 16

Kommander Sorscha Kratikoff
> Destroyer
> Destroyer
Iron Fang Uhlans [3] (0 added)

Scenario was Frontline Foray. Impaler took the far right line section for two points and pushed to keep the Destroyers away from the line. Grissel held up, but Sorscha's feat absolutely destroyed her. Sorscha kept freezing her and she could only transfer damage. Even under Grissel's feat turn I couldn't damage Sorscha more than 5 hp. Sorscha keps up Wind Rush (when not under Grissel's feat turn). The cold hearted bitch finally took out Grissel when she couldn't transfer any more.

Game 2 vs. Gabe (Circle of Orboros)
Faction: Circle Orboros
Points: 485
Model Count: 30
Victory Points: 18

Baldur the Stonecleaver
Woldwyrd
Woldwarden
Sentry Stone & Mannikins
> Mannikin
Sentry Stone & Mannikins
> Mannikin
Druids of Oboros [6]
Shifting Stones [3]
Tharn Bloodtrackers [10] (4 added)

I played my same Grissel list as I think I'm getting better and better with it. Scenario was Mudslide. I ended up with first turn. Gabe's 2nd turn put Pyre troll within Baldur's control area and 1" from the mudslide zone. Top of the third had Grissel advancing and feating. Pyre troll ran across the mudslide and into the clear. That was the end of it.

Again, Trolls 1-1. I think the next tournament I will be able to go the 1-2 I've been hoping for.

Call to Arms Week 4

Game 1 vs. Stephan (Skorne)

Troll list:
Faction: Trollblood
Points: 491
Model Count: 18
Victory Points: 18

Grissel Bloodsong, Fell Caller
Pyre Troll
Troll Impaler
Fell Caller
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes [6] (2 added)
Trollkin Champions [5]
Trollkin Long Riders [3] (0 added)

Stephan's list
Faction: Skorne
Points: 495
Model Count: 12
Victory Points: 18

Lord Tyrant Hexeris
Basilisk Krea
Cyclops Brute
Rhinodon
Titan Cannoneer
Extoller Soulward
Paingiver Beast Handlers [6] (2 added)

Scenario was Engines of Destruction.  Win condition was to have a beast completely with an 8" circle from the middle of the board. Stephan was (obviously) running a much beast-heavier list than I was.  I won first turn and ran forward just outside of the zone.  he did much the same.  Second turn saw my Impaler and Pyre step into the scoring zone.  Some skirmishing took place, if I remember correctly the longriders got smoked this turn.  The game (as is normal with Stephan and I) turned into a big scrum in the middle.  The game came down to him having the only beasts alive in the center.  Overall great game, a couple points it could have gone either way had certain things happened.

Game 2 vs. Steve (Circle of Orboros)
Faction: Circle Orboros
Points: 492
Model Count: 8
Victory Points: 18

Kromac the Ravenous
> Kromac the Ravenous (Beast Form)
Argus
Gnarlhorn Satyr
Pureblood Warpwolf
Warpwolf
War Wolf
War Wolf

Scenario was Wicked Wilderness (caster kill and Fearless models lose this ability).  Steve is a new player to our group and new to the game, prolly his fourth or fifth game.  I played my grissel list and asked him before the game if he'd like me to playe beast-heavier list (would broke out my Grim, Axer, EBDT list) he declined.  So we played and damn did he surprise me.  Circle is full of surprises and I have yet to have a game where Circle did not astonished by how many tricks they have up their sleeve.  I also have never played against Kromac or the warp-wolfies.  About turn 2 he turned the Pureblood animus on my champs (which of course only worked on this scenario), and of course my champs failed on boxcars.  champs ran one turn then rallied immediately.  Thank dog they were in forest to slow their retreat.  Then on top of that the next turn Kromac did his alley-oop over my pyre troll between Grissel, Pyre Troll, Impaler and some Champs and smacked the shit out of Grissel.  Again, I'm lucky he ran out of fury to keep pumping out attacks and that Grissel was under the Krielstone aura.  My next turn the Fell Caller stepped to the side and took two swings at Kromac, both missing.  Grissel stepped to the side giving her 2" reach a range to Kromac and still allowing my Impaler a shot should I need it and room for a couple Champs to slide in if still needed. Grissel took a couple swings and it was over.

Trolls 1-1

Off topic:

I generally try to keep this blog dedicated wholly to my experience and progress with my Hordes Trolls but I'm going off topic this once.

My office has blocked Blogger.com in their infinite humor (bastards!) and so I cannot visit my own blog, reply to comments left for me nor can I visit other people's blogs.  bah!  I do however receive an email every time I receive the rare comment (thank you to all).  if I do not respond it is not because I do not want anything to do with your comment, it's because I can't do anything with it while at work and I generally forget by the time I get home.

On the other hand I can check all the blogs I'm subscribed to because they have *not* blocked my access to Google Reader.  So I can read all y'alls blogs, but again, I can't leave comments.

The final issue is that I can't post pictures to my blog when I blog via email from work. :(  Blogger's email interface fouls up any html code I drop into the post.  So my blog looks bland compared to most everyone elses :(

First 750 Point League Game

Thinking of running a 750 point Grissel list for League this week, then a 500 point follow up.  (hopefully gain a little ground with some extra points)

List I'm considering:

744/750
VP: 24
Models: 24

Grissel Bloodsong, Fell Caller
Dire Troll Mauler
Pyre Troll
Troll Impaler
Trollkin Champions
Trollkin Champions
Trollkin Longriders [2 added]
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes [0 added]
Fell Caller

Thinking of dropping the Pyre for an Axer to provide a "medium" troll and the Rush animus can be useful on the Longriders

Grissel - 500 - W/LR's

Army Points: 491
Victory Points: 18

Name - Cost - VP
Grissel Bloodsong - 70 - 5
Pyre Troll - 68 - 2
Troll Impaler - 75 - 2
Krielstone Bearer and Stone Scribes (8 pts.) [2 added] - 50 - 2
Trollkin Long Riders (26 pts.) [0 added]  87 3
Trollkin Champions - 10 -  3
Fell Caller - 35 - 1

Stractics:
Grissel to sit under KSB aura, champs running as a bodyguard, keeping Longriders close at hand until they are within charge range of the enemy.  Once within charge range (10"+2"Reach) Grissel sings Hoof It on Longriders and casts Flaming Fists on one model.  Sole Long Rider charges into melee at MAT9, P+S 17(?), if within 1/2" yaks get an attack of POW 14 with crit knockdown.  Move Champs into counterattack range should Longrider not take out entire unit.  At the end of turn pull back longriders into KSB aura (hopefully).
If opponent charges champs, longriders counterattack next turn with Heroic Ballad for extra attack or Grissel can sing Heroic Ballad to the Champs to allow them to clear their plates and allow the Longriders to charge something else.
Fell Caller stands things up, gives open road to necessary units.
Impaler, crit slams, increase Grissel's hand cannon range to 16".
Pyre troll doesn't just provide animus, also AOE and melee if necessary.

Cons:
Missing out on 16 wounds (3 longriders vs. 5 champs), 2 models, and possibly 7 attacks (14 under feat turn)

Pros:
Able to engage first and bring the fight to the enemy rather than vice-versa.  Bigger KSB aura than my main Grissel list, which could lead to more ablative wounds if Grissel is being threatened.

Trample

Just read over on Trollblood Scrum!!! (http://trollbloodscrum.blogspot.com/2009/03/trollblood-trample.html) about Trolls trampling and how TheGreatBlah used it to take out a group of Bane Knights.
I'm curious how Bane Knight Shadow Shift works in that instance.  Are they "directly hit" and if so what's to stop a player who has one model hit with the trample from moving the next model out of the Trample lane?
Thinking now, Trample will not work with the Axer's Rush animus because Rush does not give the choice and a charge is not a Trample attack.
I really like the tactic and never thought of combining Snacking with Trample.

I think I may put it to use with my Grim list this week at league.

Would it be worth it to build an army around this tactic?

Grim Angus - Bait the Line, Eagle Eye, Trailblazer
Earthborn Dire Troll - +2" SPD when within 1" of rough terrain
Pyre Troll - +2STR (possible crit fire)
(there's gotta be a model who buffs the EBDT's MAT or debuffs enemy DEF, I just can't think of it right now)

Also, small based models who get trampled but not "hit" should be knocked down.
And another thing, Grissel's Hoof it would be sick with this if she could affect a warbeast with it :(  (7-8" trample, additional attacks, after everyone moves, beast could then disengage without freestrikes)

Grissel + Longriders

So in my loving my new Grissel lists and reading Metamorphosis' new cast of characters (Horthol, Long Rider Champion) I had an idea for her: How does she react to Longriders?  Do people avoid using Longriders with her due to the shorter range of her fell calls?
What's to stop me from activating Grissel, fell calling Hoof It to the Longriders, casting Cacophony onto a unit, cast Rush on one yak-rider, activate the Axer, cast Rush on another yak-rider, activate and charge that unit with the Longriders (7"+5"+2" reach at an effective MAT11), then after the army has completed their activations, pull the longriders back their 7" move.

Faction: Trollblood
Points: 495
Model Count: 18
Victory Points: 18

Grissel Bloodsong, Fell Caller
Troll Axer
Troll Impaler
Fell Caller

Call to Arms Week 3

Game 1 vs. Cesar (Circle of Orboros)

Troll List:
Faction: Trollblood
Points: 494
Model Count: 18
Victory Points: 18

Grissel Bloodsong, Fell Caller
Pyre Troll
Troll Impaler
Fell Caller
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes [4] (0 added)
Trollkin Champions [5]
Trollkin Champions [5]

Cesar's List:
Faction: Circle Orboros
Points: 499
Model Count: 17
Victory Points: 18

Baldur the Stonecleaver
Woldwatcher
Woldwarden
Woldwarden
Sentry Stone & Mannikins
> Mannikin
Druids of Oboros [6]
Shifting Stones [3]

I love my Grissel Evo III list!
We played the Death Valley scenario.  He ended up with first turn.  Baldur made his way up, feated first turn and assumed that he had won the scenario.  Unfortunately the scenario stated that you couldn't win until the third turn and controlled two points in the valley.
Ended up with a huge scrum in the middle, second turn Grissel feats and one unit of champs take a good sized chunk out of a Warden and Watcher.  Then the other unit take a chink out of the other Warden.  He popped off my Fell caller, but my KSB and stone scribes made all their tough rolls.  Two champs didn't make it back either.  At the end of the top of the forth turn my opponent conceded as I dropped his Watcher and one Warden with the last one coming soon.  I would have pushed back and driven him off the scenario marker and won on scenario, but instead I took the caster kill.

Game 2 vs. Gabe (Mercs)
Troll List:
Faction: Trollblood
Points: 494
Model Count: 18
Victory Points: 18

Grissel Bloodsong, Fell Caller
Pyre Troll
Troll Impaler
Fell Caller
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes [4] (0 added)
Trollkin Champions [5]
Trollkin Champions [5]

Gabe's list:
Faction: Four Star Syndicate
Points: 486
Model Count: 14
Victory Points: 18

Magnus The Traitor
> Renegade
> Renegade
> Mariner
Eiryss, Mage Hunter of Ios
Master Gunner Dougal MacNaile
Cylena Raefyll & Nyss Hunters [6] (0 added)
Lady Aiyana & Master Holt [2]

Scenario was Tagged where there's two watchtowers who have to hit and damage every 'jack or beast in the opponent's army to win scenario.  I was doing well until I pulled a Ray.  I left Grissel hanging in the wind, as Gabe would say "hey, look at me!  I'll bet you can't shoot me with all your guns in one turn!"  So yea, the game went two turns.  Doh!

Both games were a lot of fun, my understanding of Slams and Throws needs to get better, but overall the Grissel list is a lot of fun to play and I don't think it's too abusive for my opponents to get upset about my playing it time and again.

Life Interjects Without Prior Warning

Ok, this Saturday is tourney #3 for Warmachine/Hordes @ Sunshine Adventure Gaming.

I signed up. I fucked around, I checked out some stuff. Apparently this weekend is the final weekend for the local Renaissance Festival. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it two years ago and the year prior to that (the shit I am, I put it off so long last year we literally pulled into the parking lot as the caravan pulled out). I want to go this year and feel bad about spoiling last year so I am taking my wife on Saturday.

This now leaves my play group shy one player. I feel guilty (as I should I gave them my word I would be there, butas the post title says, Life Interjected).

I will be playing at League Night this Thursday (with my Grissel Evo III list and a Grim list of which I am getting more and more comfortable with). I've finageled with the wife to allow me another gaming night because I'm missing the tourney and she agreed, so I'm trying to get in a night to play against Gabe and Cary to sharpen me a bit more.

I've got three League weeks left to eke out some sort of standing (other than on the ground), maybe I could get in some league games instead of going to Gabe's?

The next league looks like it will be the MKII Beta Test league and me without a Warmachine Army. Unless Gabe wants to forego the MKII Beta I don't think I'll be able to play in that league, maybe I can get together with the other Hordes players (mental note: Stephan - Skorne, Cesar - Circle, Mario - Legion, Ashe - Circle) on league nights and get in some games.

Slam vs. Shadow Shift question

If a Troll Impaler throws a spear at a Bane Knight and gets the crit slam, when does the slam take place?  Before or after the shadow shift?  The Shadow Shift triggers when an enemy directly hits the model the Crit Slam triggers when I hit the model.  I would assume that being the active player I have priority.

in another question, how does Shadow Shift work if the model is knocked down?  Do they get the shadow shift?  Are they still knocked down after the shift?

Grissel List Evolution

Messaging Not Dice through the Guru Dojo (http://www.gurudojo.com) has helped me think more about my lists.

I've got a tourney this Saturday, what do I expect to see?  I expect to face a Khador list (there are two players in my League Group and at least two if not three in the Tourney Crew) so I should see Drakhun, Sorscha and Vlad.  I will see a Cygnar player (again two of 'em) so Haley will be a pain as will most likely Striker and Caine.  Cryx, we have one Cryx player who I expect to see bane Knight Spam and Skarre from.  Skorne, Most likely Morghoul and Makeda.  There's one Circle player who is mainlining Baldur so it will be imperative that I get first turn and get to whatever scenario zone there is ASAP.  Our Legion player is playing sporadically so I don't think he'll be playing in the league this week, but he will most likely be playing this Saturday for the tourney, I expect to see Saeryn and her no-melee feat.  He is also a fan of Rhyas.  I'm not overly familiar with those two so I will have to do my reading...

With those in mind I'm looking towards running the following lists this weekend at the tourney (to be table tested this Thursday at league)

Grissel Evo III
Points - 494/500
VP's - 18

Grissel Bloodsong - 70
Pyre Troll - 68
Troll Impaler - 75
Fell Caller - 35
Trollkin Champions - 106
Trollkin Champions - 106
Kreilstone Bearer & Stone Scribes - 34

Grim Melee
Points - 500/500
VP's - 18

Grim Angus - 76
Troll Impaler - 75
Dire Troll Mauler - 111
Trollkin Champions - 106
Fell Caller - 35
Krielstone Bearer & Stone Scribes (full) - 50
Swamp Gobbers Bellows Crew - 15
Alten Ashley, Monster Hunter - 32

Scenario was Cabin Fever.  You had to have a model/unit completely within 4” of the cabin in the center of the board by the end of the first player’s third turn, if you were within 2” you took damage.  I got first turn, Grissel activated, fell called Hoof It to the KSB, dumped all fury onto the KSB and walked up 5”.  Activated and walked the KSB up 5 inches, and dropped the +2ARM aura.  Champs units flanked the KSB on both sides with the Hero behind the center most unit.  Fell Caller and Axer flanked Grissel.  KSB activated again and walked up another 5”.  Then the hurt started.  He dropped a Sentry Stone near the cabin and close to me and started making Mannikins every turn and spraying me with pine needles.  He destroyed my KSB unit.  On his second turn he pops Baldur’s feat and locked me out of the objective area.  Bottom of my third turn I couldn’t get into the area and lost.  Good game Cesar, way to play the scenario.

This morning I realized I could have shut down some of his Woldwarden spellcasting if I had fell called Cacophony.

Scenario was to hold a line 4” wide across the center of the board, 2” from each side.  I played my new(ish) Madrak Brick list against this thinking I could have done better in scenario.  First turn I dumped all Maddy’s fury onto the KSB, ran all but the KSB up and bricked up with +2 ARM and the champs at the front just on my side of the scenario line.  Then he came.  He was too beast heavy for my list.  Only one unit of champs stood between two heavies and three lights and Madrak.  We both ended up in the center.  Where I could have held up his units a bit by charging with the champs and locking him into a drawn out melee I instead stayed in close to the scenario line and allowed him to charge me.  My Impaler went down HARD against the Rhinodon (note to self: don’t underestimate that horn attack again) later in the game the Rhinodon took out a majority of my KSB’s .

Unfortunately I didn’t see the tarpit of champs running forward and blocking his charge lanes until just now, coulda been backed up by my KSB’s further mucking up his charges, leaving my Earthborn and Madrak the only models within 2” of the center line, winning by scenario.

Lesson learned: pay closer attention to alternate win conditions on the scenario, rather than out-lasting him on the center line, prevent him from getting there in the first place.

In other news on this game the attrition game woulda been better played out with the Grissel list with 84 wounds on the champs plus the KSB +2ARM, plus Grissel’s +1 swing per champ, but the issue would have been the assassination I would have needed to do against Morghoul.

On to the next game.
