The Masses Have Spoken

Hey guys, well, the masses, erm, uh, the 9 of you have spoken (thanks mom). My blog specifically for my Menoth Army will be called Trial By Fire.

I'm working up a simple banner like the one above and I've cross posted the three posts here onto there so I don't lose track of them.

During the MKII Field Test (this last week) I will be updating the blog then as I play the army and build upon it I will be posting then too.

I'm thinking, perhaps, (and time will tell on this) if I should just amend the name of this blog to cover both and work up a simple banner for both...

anyhoo, for the time being at least there is a new blog up (nothing overly exciting I'm afraid) over at Trial By Fire

Ghetto Terrain

As I was playing at home yesterday and as I don't own nor can I store any terrain I had to improvise. I ran out to Michael's and picked up some felt. Three colors to cover all the terrain expected in Warmachine and Hordes.
Brown for hills, green for forests and blue for water.

It worked out very well and was very cheap. I would recommend it to anyone without a way to store any real 3d terrain.

New Recruits

Picked up a couple new models @ Sunshine Friday.

Brun Cragbak & Lug
Dire Troll Blitzer
Alten Ashley, Monster Hunter

Unfortunately the Blitzer is missing his right hand. I emailed AJ @ Privateer Press to get my replacement ASAP.

Looking @ Brun & Lug they look slike a badass team, I am curious to try out an army with the minion casters. Maybe Brun & Lug will have a good synergy with Grim with their built in pathfinder.

On Modeling

I've been slacking this week with my modeling, although in my defense my wife and I went to our karate class every night and i've got the bruises and sore neck to prove it. Not to mention my training game on Monday with my local PG.

Anyhoo, I've got two models coming today @ my LGS, Sunshine Adventure Gaming. I've got the Trollkin Hero in all his top-knot glory as well as a Stone Scribe Chronicler.
I think they will be built tonight and possibly decorative-basing done.

Then I will begin my Greenstuff work. I've got some ginormous gaps to fill with Greenstuff. Particularly, I'm concerned about my Earthborn Dire Troll, I need to strengthen those joins as I didn't pin his fat-ass.
Some others of note are my Longriders, thank Dhunia that the gaps are in the yak-fur and easy to hide. Pyre Troll #2 - in his wrists. Dire Troll Mauler - especially his headspikes, will have to be careful to blend it well onto the model.

After Greenstuffing (hopefully a short process) I can add sand to the bases then prime them! Woot!

If i have time after basing and priming, I may be able to finish the models I started forever ago, my two Impalers, Axer, Madrak, Kenny and Borka.

I need to slow down on my purchases or I'll never get these guys painted

In other news I want to pick up a Dire Troll Blitzer and Alten Ashley.

Revising Grim List

I posted my list on PP's forums to get some feedback on it. The most interesting point that was made was that, as there is only one beast on the list, meaning that if he dies or is full fury or frenzied, I have -zero- damage transfers available to me.
From that nugget, I went ahead and added the normal "Grim auto-include" beast, an Impaler.
Had to drop some to get him in. Which led to a tough decision so I posed the question on Guru Dojo where a Troll-vet (Not Dice) responded and gave me a good piece of advice: Drop the Krielstone Bearer.

This is the list at the moment:
489/500

Grim Angus
Earthborn Dire Troll
Troll Impaler
Trollkin Champions
Trollkin Hero
Fell Caller
Stone Scribe Chronicler
Swamp Gobber Bellows Crew

Not Dice also let me know that Concealment and Screening bonuses stack, which means that if I stick Grim in some woods behind the EBDT using the EBDT's ARM stat, he's at 19 DEF, 18 ARM.

I'm looking forward to getting this together and playing Gabe with it next week (hopefully).

Purchases: I've ordered some more models from Sunshine, some will come in this Friday (1/23/09) some next Friday (1/30/09):

Oops!

Was browsing online for a good price on Hordes Evolution and found a copy for $22.11 + $3.99 s&h. Was so good i put it in the basket.
Then I tried to remove it from the basket.
And I accidentally bought it.

Oops.

At least @ $26.10 I saved 25% from the retail price...right?

Misspent Saturdays...

Went on a recon mission to Ft. Lauderdale/Davie area yesterday. I was looking for two stores (with a possible third if things didn't turn out right). I checked out The Adventure Game Store and War & Pieces. First stop was War & Pieces, I had emailed them concerning their 40K events and received a fast response from Sandy, one of the owners. So I graced them with my presence first.

Upon entering I was greeted by the guy at the counter, and within 10 seconds of wandering over to the Warmachine/Hordes display I was addressed by a player, "What faction do you play?" (Awesome signs and portents!).

W&P has a HUGE selection of Privateer Press merchandise, almost EVERY blister on their pegboard, all the books in great condition and ready for sale.

Hung out for a bit talked with some of the players and staff then headed to Adventure Game Store.

Adventure was nice, the people were friendly, they were having a 20% off sale on all their Privateer stuff, but it had been picked over, and nothing I wanted at this juncture was available. They *did* have a cool collection of out of print games (GW & MB's Battle Masters, reminded me of HeroQuest days!), but I digress. Table space was limited (perhaps due to the CCG tournament being held, they didn't have any terrain out), but they did have a leader board for Wings of War which I found interesting as I couldn't find a copy of the game on the shelf. All in all, a smaller store, smaller selection, and more dedicated to CCG's. I may return to pick up a board game in the future though.

Then I went back to W&P and watched two games. I watched a beginner game of Khador vs. Skorne. Then a more advanced, tourney-prep game of Cryx vs. Skorne. I got to glean quit a bit of knowledge from the players and met some new people to play with. It seems the Warmachine/Hordes crrew gets quite a bit of playtime there. I look forward to playing.

I also picked up a new model while there. I really wanted to be able to build a model and don't want to wait for my warpack to come. I was torn between three models:

+Dire Troll Mauler
+Hoarluck Doomshaper
+Borka Kegslayer

In the end I decided on Borka, even though I don't have any units as of yet, it will allow me to change the fighting style of the models I get in my warpack. Next model purchase will be one of the following:

+Dire Troll Mauler
+Trollkin Champions
+Krielstone Bearer & Scribes
+Hoarluck Doomshaper

Anyways, I unpacked Borka last night, cleaned what tabs/flash/mold lines there were (very little), dry-fitted him, then put him in a bath to wash any mold release off of him.
He's drying and getting ready to assemble tonight or later this week.

Bought - Trollbloods Warpack

Purchased the Trollbloods warpack (Alibris for $32.73, shipped). Should be in my hands by 11/2. Considering picking up the Dire Troll Mauler @ War & Pieces this weekend. We'll see where finances sit.
